This political cartoon that was drawn from subject of technology features characters from Harry Potter, a popular book and movie series by J.K. Rowling. Dumbledore, a teacher at Hogwarts, the school for Wizardry and Witchcraft, questions Ron, Harry, and Hermione, who are students at Hogwarts. Dumbledore asks them where their wands are, and Harry responds by stating that they upgraded to iPhones. By using popular modern day characters, it attracts the attention of teenagers who appear to be the target of this cartoon. At Hogwarts, wands are used as a learning and survival tool for the wizards. Since the students traded in their wands for iPhones, they are also replacing the traditional way of learning with modernized techniques. I believe this cartoon is directed to 21st century teenagers, as that specific age group grew up with technological devices and heavily rely on them. It is debatable whether there is a positive or negative message being conveyed as this topic is controversial. However, I believe that this cartoon is demonstrating the negative effects of technology. The idea of introducing technology into the school environment is also extremely controversial. Technology may be easier, convenient, and faster for students, but it also serves as a huge distraction and decrease in hands on activity. The drawing also shows Ron and Hermione using their phones while Dumbledore interrogating them. This shows that technology is captivating and constantly keeping teenagers busy, which affects their everyday lives.
