The incident of an exploding iPhone causing a New York man to receive burns on his leg has been reported by multiple newspapers. Due to Apple’s lack of communication to newspaper reporters, there has not been any articles released that demonstrate their side to this story. However, New York Daily News has written a report that appears show their support for the victim, Erik Johnson.
The word choice in the title of both articles are similar, however the NY Daily Newspaper included more information about the condition of the burn. The title states that it was a third degree burn, and CNN’s used the word “severe”. By stating it was a third degree burn, it appears to be worse and it provides readers with an image of how serious the burn was. The New York Daily News article features video clips from an interview with Erik Johnson’s lawyer, Mike Della, whereas the CNN article only features quotes. The video clips of Mike Della provide readers with dialogue that truly exaggerates the goal of defending Erik Johnson. In addition, the NY Daily News article states that Apple has not replied back to Johnson’s lawyer, whereas the CNN has stated that Apple is beginning to look into the incident. The date of publication for these articles are different, however, NY Daily News did not edit their article or update their readers as the story developed. Lastly, the NY Daily News article featured an increased amount of images of the damaged iPhone than the CNN article. NY Daily News is trying to show readers how severe the iPhone was damaged itself, and then relate it back to the burn on Johnson’s leg.
NY Daily News slightly supported Johnson more in this incident. Both articles appeared to have been reported the news fairly, but NY Daily News included more graphic images and text that made readers clearly understand Johnson’s burn and how the cause was an iPhone. Details that were left out were a result of different publication dates.
